Summer Camp

A summer of learning, laughter, and shared joy — where community, creativity, and culture come alive.

Summer Camp: Community, Creativity & Connection

Every July, MCLC opens its doors — and its heart — to children and families across Matènwa and nearby towns, welcoming local residents and visitors alike for one- or two-week courses designed around shared learning, cultural exchange, and community building.

In the mornings, we focus on training and staff development. Afternoons are filled with vibrant camp sessions for children of all ages: games, crafts, arts, storytelling, music, sports — and the laughter, energy, and hope that only a summer camp can bring.

Families come together. Visitors bring fresh ideas. MCLC becomes a hub of possibility — where young people and adults alike reconnect with joy, creativity, and community.

The Impact: Summer That Lasts

In a place where economic hardship, instability, and uncertainty are constant companions, Summer Camp offers something rare and precious: a chance for children to just be children.

  • It keeps learning alive — bridging school years with a rhythm of curiosity, play, and friendship, so students return to class refreshed, inspired, and engaged.

  • It strengthens community bonds — bringing together families from different neighborhoods, inviting elders, youth, visitors and locals to participate side by side.

  • It nourishes body and spirit — offering daily meals, creative outlets, and laughter in a safe, supportive space.

  • It builds bridges between cultures — connecting Haitian youth with visitors, volunteers, and international partners who come to learn, share, and support.

Summer Camp is more than a break — it’s a renewal of hope, a celebration of resilience, and a tangible expression of community solidarity.

What Summer Camp Offers

Over the years, Summer Camp has become a beloved and vital tradition at MCLC — a time when children look forward to art, laughter, learning, and belonging, and families reconnect with hope. Alumni of the camp carry memories, friendships, and sometimes new skills that shape their everyday life.

Teachers return to their classrooms energized with new ideas; young people discover talents and confidence; communities deepen solidarity. What begins as a few playful weeks becomes part of a long journey of resilience, creativity, and shared growth.

Summer Camp isn’t just a seasonal program — it’s part of building a future where Haitian youth thrive, communities heal, and hope grows stronger year after year.

  • Workshops & Courses led by both local teachers/students and visiting volunteers — covering arts, crafts, music, photography, leadership, entrepreneurship, sustainable agriculture, storytelling, and more.

  • Fun & Play for Kids of All Ages — board games, sports, drawing, creative play, group games. For many children, it’s a highlight of the year.

  • Community Dialogue & Exchange — spaces where adults and youth share ideas around social, economic, political, and development issues — all in a spirit of respect, listening, and mutual learning.

  • Daily Meal Program — ensuring that every child leaves camp nourished and cared for, reinforcing that education and well-being go hand in hand.

  • Capacity Building for Local Educators — morning staff development ensures that skills, ideas, and energy gained during camp reinforce the broader mission of MCLC.

How You Can Support Summer Camp

  • Sponsor a child’s participation — help cover meals, materials, and activity costs so every child can join, regardless of family resources.

  • Donate supplies or materials — from art supplies to sports gear, from books to gardening tools, every contribution enriches the camp experience.

  • Volunteer your time or expertise — visitors, educators, artists, mentors: your presence can inspire children and deepen cross-cultural bonds.

  • Share this vision — help spread the word about Summer Camp’s role in nurturing community, resilience, and creative hope in Matènwa.
